WhatsApp for Android Tests New Message Translation Feature Using Google's Technology
WhatsApp's live translation feature is expected to start with English and Hindi, with more languages to be added later.
WhatsApp is testing a new feature that lets users translate messages into other languages, according to a feature tracker. This live translation feature works on the device and may use Google's live translation technology. It was seen in a beta version of the WhatsApp app for Android. This follows another beta feature that could add live transcription for voice messages.
WhatsApp's Live Message Translation Feature:
WhatsApp Beta Info reports that WhatsApp is testing a feature that lets you translate messages in real-time directly on your device, keeping your data local instead of using a cloud server. This feature was found in version 2.24.15.8 of the WhatsApp Android app.
Users might need to download language packs to use this feature. At first, it will only support English and Hindi, but more languages will be added later. The feature tracker suggests that translations will happen directly in chats, so users won't need to leave the app to translate messages.
The feature tracker claims that the live transcription option is not available to even beta testers as it is still in development. Thus, those who are on the latest version of WhatsApp for Android beta via the Google Pay Beta program may not be able to access it. Gadgets 360 staff members were unable to verify its availability on WhatsApp for android beta app.
Voice Message Transcription:
In addition to live translation of messages, WhatsApp for Android is also working on live transcription of voice messages. This feature will let users create text versions of voice messages they send or receive. A new banner might appear below a voice message, asking if the user wants a transcription.
- WhatsApp's voice message transcripts feature has been seen in the Android beta version 2.24.15.5. According to WABetaInfo, this feature lets Android users quickly read transcriptions of long voice notes.
- Several beta testers can now use this feature, which requires downloading an extra data package to protect user privacy.
- Beta testers can now download language data packages like Hindi, English, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), and Russian.
- More languages are expected to be added later. These packages suggest that the feature is currently available to a limited number of users in regions where these languages are common.
- It's unclear when the feature will be available to all Android users, but WhatsApp may introduce it in a future update.
This feature was found in version 2.24.15.5 of the WhatsApp for Android beta app and is available to beta testers.
